Pets often fill an important emotional and social role, particularly for seniors who live alone or may not have regular visitors. Losing a pet can feel like losing a close family member or friend. For many seniors, pets provide companionship, purpose, and emotional stability, so losing a pet can profoundly affect their well-being. Understanding the impact of pet loss on seniors is essential for providing compassionate support, especially in senior housing communities.
This training session will provide senior housing professionals with information, guidance and support when addressing grief associated with the loss of a pet with the residents and the entire housing community.
After successfully completion of this training session, participants will:
- Understand the impact of pet loss on older adults.
- Recognize the key signs of grief and depression in older adults following the loss of a pet.
- Explore tips and strategies for supporting older adults individually after the loss of a pet.
- Address barriers to getting a new pet.
- Identify resources that can help older adults cope with the loss of a beloved pet.
